Verónica Durán González is an abstract painter from Spain. To create her vibrant, nature-inspired artworks, she uses mainly watercolor and acrylic on canvas and paper.
Her paintings are exactly like a bird song—sharp, distinct, and fresh. Accompanied by the quotes from the artist’s notebook, they read as postcards from exotic travels. González lets the sounds, colors, and scents of nature flow through her, translating them with the aid of paint. She allows a chromesthesia-like state to guide her through the process, resulting in multilayered pieces rich in meaning and emotions.
In this series of paintings, González poetically depicts the sounds of the robin through vivid abstract and impressionistic imagery, beautifully capturing the bird’s song through bold and dynamic brushstrokes. The simple yet compelling mix of colorful lyricism and reverie-like watercolors successfully distills the freshness and wonder of warm seasons, rooting the viewer in a state of dream and relaxation.
Looking at these paintings transports us back to childhood, when we were lying on our backs in the grass, under a tree during summer break, with our eyes closed and no cares in the world.
Artist’s Note:
“The robin’s song draws me toward places my sight cannot reach. I enter a process of de-centering in which sound guides the chromatic record; painting emerges as the very matter of that vibration, like a sonogram fixing a network of frequencies.
I follow its trail through metallic trebles and warbles that modulate the atmosphere. Color, a physical response to that improvisation, acts as a cryptochrome, translating layers of visual information that had remained hidden until now.
The bird sings for the simple sake of being alive, and it would seem that the song creates both the forest and the bird itself.
This is an ongoing project, still in its early stages of research. What I share here is its inaugural work, along with fragments from my notebook.”

RAWGUE. started as a bi-monthly editorial experiment where each issue’s theme is dictated by the submitted work, thus removing editorial bias from the equation and preserving a more raw approach. We focus on all forms of poetry: written, photographed, painted, drawn, and filmed.
