Bo G. Svensson is a Nyköping-based Swedish artist and filmmaker whose vast interdisciplinary work revolves around difficult, tough themes such as the interactions between history and the built environment.

His unique approach is an experimental blend of fine art, poetry, and electronica, funneled out through both analog and digital outputs. Through the use of such a plethora of mediums to evoke emotions and experiences, Svensson welcomes us to a synesthetic narrative, “inviting the viewers to listen with their eyes and reflect on the subtle rhythms of life.”

In the series presented here, Svensson draws from the same quiet versatility, where consciousness becomes movable. We are nature, and thus, consciousness is volatile; it can be easily displaced. We can, in this way, experience life through an infinity of channels, not only our bodies. We can be a flower, a tree, or an individual, connected by an exceptional bond. “What connects them is a special mood for each of the photographs. But mostly,” he says, “I consider them to be self-portraits.”

Svensson connects old and new in multiple ways—by combining analog and digital techniques, monochrome and color, modern and rustic. Ultimately, the most significant theme that threads through his portfolio is the passage of time. This meditation on decay is not a bitter or depressing one. It is rather full of gentle affection for the fragility of departure. Such an approach is possible because the artist sees himself in everything that surrounds him.

The photographer’s sensibility allows him to admire the beauty of architecture, people, and nature alike and treat them with equal attention and depth. With his every photo, the viewer is very much aware that there is a bigger picture surrounding the frame and there can be two vastly different approaches to experience Svensson’s art. One is to read it as constrained by the dimensions of the photograph; the other is to dive into every one of them as into a microcosm in its own right.

The 31 artists featured in RAWGUE. Magazine’s 5th issue stray from the expected, taking untrodden paths, contemplating imperfection, solitude in its many forms, and the ongoing process of self-acceptance. Through shifting perspectives, their works explore what it means to look at oneself from the outside, as if through broken glass.
