Ana Dima is a street and event photographer from Bucharest, Romania. In this series of concert photos, she attempts to capture the power of music and its liberating properties.

“Music has the ability to transform, to set us free: free from routines, free from distraction, and free to fully inhabit the moment and connect with those around us. It is a power that unites, a power that awakens the soul, bringing us closer to who we truly are,” Dima says.

The black and white photographs of the audience and performers are dynamic portraits of community, a chronicle of unleashed, candid movement and music’s power to create connections. It is a matryoshka of art—one kind of it captured within the other.

Dima’s considerable work revolves around the idea that music is more than an element to her photography. While as a chosen genre she focuses on event, concert, and street photography, her dynamic, visually eloquent imagery sets music at the centerpiece. Music isn’t only a medium; it’s the pipeline, the main artery of her art.

She not only attempts to do through photography what music does through sounds; she elevates her own capabilities by attempting to evoke music through images. Drums turn into motion blur, vibrations turn into grain, and the audience becomes the fluctuating channel that connects both mediums.

She says, “I love capturing raw, unfiltered emotions, and music speaks to me just as powerfully as it does to the people I photograph.”
Through both vividly colored and black-and-white, piercing one-shots, Dima succeeds in summoning through her concert photography the energy that such an event would deliver otherwise.
