From the recurring Indonesian artist, Rizky Sandika, we present a new series of photographs.
As Sandika specified before, he is building his portfolio to establish a personal vision and to connect with other artists. This time, however, a clear detachment from random photography involved a series focused on “a visual and poetic exploration of Indonesian society during the Independence Day celebrations” titled “Laughter in Red and White.”
Sandika shoots predominantly in monochrome, dimming the buzz and brightness of the street scenes. This choice is especially prominent in the featured series, where the captured celebration includes the national colors.
Through his poetic and third-person perspective on a simple occasion, the multidisciplinary artist creates an immersive segment dedicated to a just as simple, yet powerful emotion—joy. For it doesn’t take much to create it, but once it occurs, it overtakes everything.
“Laughter in Red and White“ In the noise of village games, people forget the price of rice, forget broken promises. A stripe of red and white on the cheek is enough reason to laugh. How easily the people find joy, even as life is carved by injustice. Maybe that’s what freedom truly means not the absence of burden, but the strength to smile with the world on your shoulders.

Read our “Metamorphosis” issue in full
In the 3rd issue of RAWGUE., 24 visual artists and poets share a common pursuit: authenticity over perfection. The subtle art of becoming, the passage through various stages of artistic contemplation, the ever-shifting states of mind, feeling, and medium, or the act of altering reality to underline emotion or meaning – metamorphosis.
We’re a team of writers using our craft to spotlight art in its most honest form. RAWGUE. started as a bi-monthly editorial experiment where each issue’s theme is dictated by the submitted work, thus removing editorial bias from the equation and preserving a more raw approach. We focus on all forms of poetry: written, photographed, painted, drawn, and filmed.
