Featured • Marina Gialama

Marina Gialama is a Greek contemporary artist who uses various mediums, such as ink, charcoal, pastel, acrylic, plaster, or clay, to create expressionist sketches, paintings, and sculptures.

Her artworks focus on the integral human form—both the smooth and the rough around the edges. Gialama’s somber and poetic paintings are a tender and unpretentious ode to the human body. Nudity itself is shadowed by the shape of what the body exudes, by its form and its language.

By immersing herself in capturing it through a plethora of various mediums, it shows the hunger, the inherent desire the artist has in containing a subject’s meaning, filtering it out through her own vision and perception, and delivering it to the world as an offering. Drawing inspiration from the work of other artists (such as Nasos Karabelas, a contributor to this very issue), Gialama offers an alternative interpretation distilled through personal bias.
